NOVUM article in the best design magazine from Germany

Novum is the number one Graphic Design magazine in Germany.

The German design mag published a 4 pages article on my artworks and my background. Here is a translation of the original text from German to English.
Thank you Novum magazine for the nice article about me and my work as an artist.

Novum magazine

Especially when it comes to designers, it is important to stand out and to develop an individual style.
Easier said than done. Mega is an autodidact illustrator who stands out from the french design scene in his individual way.

Follow your own line is the political and social message you can sense in Mega’s work. The artist has this a certain rebellious and individual attitude. Mega grew up in a boring town in the southwest of France. At the time he spent most of his time with graffiti friends. Under the name of Middle Classes, the kids rebelled against existing norms and stereotypes, but their criticism was not about politic. They challenged the graffiti movement itself, despising B-Boy characters and Wild Style letters. I think I hated graffiti more than I loved it, Mega says today. Mega was influenced by the 3-D scene from Germany and Switzerland. He found more inspiration in graphic design rather than in traditional graffiti magazines. After a couple of years the illustrator moved forward and taught himself how to computer softwares and graphic programs. Eventually he moved to Paris and launched his own fanzines and became an art direction for various design publications.

Sergeant Paper gallery for Novum magazine

I tend to be really focussed when I work on my artworks. For this one I was at Sergeant Paper gallery in Paris.

After various jobs as a graphic designer and art director, Mega decided to work as a freelance illustrator. He worked mainly for record labels, magazines and fashion labels. He kept the name Mega, a name with different levels of interpretation. I have a weird sense of humor, says the artist, and find the name Mega to be funny, because it sounds so pretentious. Mega fly effortlessly from drawings to graffiti to vector graphics or typography. The multi-talented artist may be the product of a generation exposed to visual cultures from a very young age. Punk and hip hop influences are mixed with pixel visuals visual and glitter advertising. Mega mixes and resample his influences like a music producer. Urban culture meets mainstream and is interpreted in a unique way, a way that allow him to reach the audience of all the design scenes.

EBOY
Interview with the godfathers of pixel

eboy draw your word in pixels.

A lil’ interview with the godfathers of pixel, I mean of course the artists trio eBoy.
Undisputed sovereigns of pixel art, The graphic collective Eboy has developed throughout the years a sophisticated artwork where you can see rampaging robots climbing big buildings next to tanned bikini girls, all of it in a complex and fun looking 3D world. With their shiny style, Steffen Sauerteig, Svend Smital and kai Vermehr have quickly earned worldwide recognition, and caught the eye of companies as big as MTV, Honda, or Coca-Cola. Kai brings us beyond the screen and explains to ACCLAIM how Eboy became one of today’s finest art crews.

Pixel drawing of Berlin

LET’S GO BACK TO THE EARLY DAYS. HOW DID YOU ALL MEET?
Svend and Steffen knew each other for a long time. I met Steffen at MetaDesign around 1996. After we left there we started gaming together. Soon we decided to start a website with fun pixel stuff on it and registered eBoy.com. Soon Svend joined and from there it just evolved.

WHAT IS THE INFLUENCE OF THE INTERNET ON YOUR WORK?
At the beginning we only wanted to work for the screen. We were not using the internet yet. All the stuff was distributed on diskettes on a viral basis. But as soon we got connected it was obvious that our work for the screen was perfect for the internet playground. So from there on we focused on it as our main medium.
We also use the internet extensively as a communication and research tool between us. We use txt, audio and video chat, flickr, etc. etc. So it is just everywhere.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST DIFFICULTY IN USING PIXELS AS A DESIGN TECHNIQUE?
I’d say it’s restriction to a square which makes organic shapes difficult. But this difficulty is what makes this technique so much fun to work with. It makes you work hard but guides you to a level of abstraction that we enjoy very much.

WHERE DOES YOUR OBSESSION WITH BIG CITIES COME FROM?
Well, it’s the place where life condenses and we do probably prefer to live – it’s where we actually are. But there are many cool places, it does not have to be a city probably…

WAS THE BERLIN ENVIRONMENT AN INFLUENCE IN THIS CHOICE?
Only because we live here and that influences us. We love Berlin, it’s a city of change and electric energy with many many faces. It’s something you sure see in our work.

WITH INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FROM THE DESIGN COMMUNITY, AND AN ENDLESS LIST OF MAJOR CLIENTS FROM NIKE TO COCA-COLA, WHAT KIND OF CHALLENGES STILL KEEP YOU MOTIVATED?
We are currently working on a new hot toy series with Kidrobot coming out in September. This is the major project at the moment. We’re also doing a Los Angeles poster for Honda, and I‘m personally working on my drumming skills. We’ll see what’s next.

GO FASTER
The Graphic Design of racing cars

Go faster book.

Go Faster is a collection of over one hundred examples of race car design.
When I was in Kuala Lumpur I designed a racing car. In this book, each colorful racing car is featured next to a blank, white model. Thanks to this juxtaposition, Go Faster shows its readers exactly how graphics modulate the look of the vehicle. This is the ideal book for anyone interested in racing and high speeds, edited by Die Gestalten Verlag, simply the best publisher in the world.

Media coverage of the Longing To Be Knotted Together exhibition

Media coverage of the Longing To Be Knotted Together exhibition

My Longing To Be Knotted Together touring exhibition is almost over.
Some of you may still come to the Marseille show on September 8th, but I thought it was time to look back at the media coverage I received for the event.

Some of the articles from this media coverage are in English, other in Chinese language, other in Indonesian, and more.
It feels great to receive such and international reception for this art project and exhibitions I did around the world in 2011.

A good opportunity for me to thank all the magazines, blogs, and most importantly the people behind the medias.
Thank you. THANK YOU!!! (just in case you didn’t get it in lowercase).
I wanna thank all of those who showed me love and support all along this journey, cause it wouldn’t have been the same without you.
You can click on every image to know more about the mag or read the whole related article.
I know, internet is quite magical.
I’ll post some of the big interviews I’ve done for various magazines in special posts during the next weeks.
Stay tuned.
